High Schools Statewide Invited to Capture School Life with Digital Cameras

August 1, 2004 -- Covina Valley Unified School District has teamed up with California State University, Pomona and California Technology Assistance Project (CTAP) Region 11, Apple Computer Corporation and Intelli-Tech to help a 1000 high school and middle school students from throughout California digitally capture their day-to-day unfiltered perspective on school.

Students will have one month to photograph their experience and share whether our schools are enclaves of safety or territories of hostility, places of learning or cubicles of monotany. From these photos, students will compare their perspective of school to how students perceived schools from 100 years ago. A group of high school students will be publishing a photo essay book using the pictures from the 1000 students participating in the project and artwork, photographs of students from 100 years ago. The students will be working with professional photographers and historians throughout the project. Some students will be traveling in busses throughout California visiting schools in the inner city, rural and suburbs in diverse geographic areas from the desert to island schools in Catalina. The project will culminate on May 14th, 2005 at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center with a multimedia show using the students photographs and reflections.

Teachers are invited to sign-up their classes to participate by emailing pletka@cvusd.k12.ca.us. Participating classes will get free digital cameras, equipment, support and training.
